Hannah Nieskens, Principal of Whitehall MS and HS

Ms. Hannah Nieskens, Principal of Whitehall High School, was selected as the recipient of the 2018 Montana Association of Secondary School Principals’ (MASSP) Principal of the Year at the first ever Montana Principals Conference held April 4-6 at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort – this is the first time that MASSP has combined their conference with MAEMSP (Montana Association of Elementary and Middle School Principals). This prestigious award recognizes outstanding school leaders who have succeeded in providing high-quality learning opportunities for students as well as demonstrating exemplary contributions to the profession.

Ms. Hannah Nieskens has been described by a student as devoting much of her time to the school and the activities involved through the school.  This student also adds that they feel very protected at school giving Hannah an A+ in school safety.

One her teachers stated that Hannah was the catalyst that moved the school from 99th to 8th on ACT scores statewide, as her mantra is “the right teacher, with the right students, with the right materials.” Hannah was also mentioned as creating a working environment where teachers are supported to improve their own practice, students are placed according to their performance and positioned to make academic gains, and our instructional materials are current.

Mr. John Sullivan, Superintendent of Whitehall School District, describes Ms. Nieskens as the definition of professional, who not only was an elementary educator, elementary principal, and now high school principal, but also has a law degree and has recently been named to the Dole Fellowship Program after being selected by the Elizabeth Dole Foundation to be a representative (one of a few nationwide) for our wounded veterans. Her actions are inspiring and serve as a reminder to our staff and students that with effort and the right attitude, one can do anything.

Kirk Miller, Executive Director of School Administrators of Montana (SAM) stated, “Hannah is an excellent educational leader.  She is an outstanding principal who has the great passion to connect with students, staff, colleagues and the community creating a comfortable, safe and constructive school environment. The MASSP and our entire organization congratulate Hannah for being selected as Montana Principal of the Year!”

As the 2018 Principal of the Year, Ms. Nieskens will represent Montana at the national level as a contender for the National Principal of the Year award.  Each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Department of State Office of Overseas Schools, and the Department of Defense Education Activity select one middle level or high school principal to represent their state as a contender for the National Principal of the Year award given in October by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).  Through the National Principal of the Year program, NASSP wishes to recognize success, inspire greatness, and celebrate excellence in our nation’s schools.

Again, the MASSP and the members of School Administrators of Montana (SAM) congratulate Ms. Hannah Nieskens on receiving this prestigious honor.
