MACSS President

Greetings and Salutations!   I am very excited to serve as the President for the Montana Association of County School Superintendents.  As a Third Term Elected County Superintendent, I serve the Butte-Silver Bow combined city-county, as well as County Superintendents all over Montana.

County Superintendents across our state play a very important role in meeting the needs of rural schools, students, teachers, trustees, parents and taxpayers.  This important and challenging position serves as a liaison between state government, the Office of Public Instruction, county government and local school districts.

Our MACSS Organization is strong in the many things that we do for our members, we meet twice yearly as a group and hold Regional Meetings throughout the year.  The upcoming year will find us conferencing in Lewistown in September and Sidney in April.  We have quite a line-up of speakers and professional development for County Superintendents planned.   Our strengths include collaborating, problem-solving situations that arise in rural districts across Montana as well as mentoring new county superintendents.

The Office of County Superintendent of Schools has been around since the 1880’s, apparently, this is an important and timeless job.  Historically speaking, they can’t get by without us.  There have been some changes with the times, I am no longer required to ride the range on horseback to visit outlying rural schools, however, some of us might.  The Montana Code Annotated as well as Administrative Rules of Montana have placed many expectations on the position.  That is part of what keeps the everchanging arena of education exciting and new.

As a member of the MACSS Executive Board, we are here to serve you, please reach out whenever you need assistance.  The core values of MACSS are: leadership, integrity, professionalism, advocacy and professional learning.  Please join us in meeting twice yearly at our conferences, with your region as scheduled or ask a question on the Community Forum page of the SAM website.  We are a team, a well spread out team across this beautiful state, distant many times but close by.

Stay in touch and happy trails to you!
